Content Warnings: You will need them. The script explicitly deals with the on-stage killing of a child (off-stage sound effects), torture, and references to pedophilia. Do not cast this play lightly.
The Role of Michal: Finding an actor to play Michal (Katurian’s brother) is incredibly difficult. He must be childlike, terrifying, hilarious, and heartbreaking. The scene where he describes killing children "so they could be in his brother’s stories" is the most challenging monologue in modern drama.
The Story sections: How do you stage The Pillowman (the character)? Most productions use a puppet, a costume, or a shadow play. The script gives you no answers. A PDF allows you to highlight every "story" transition and build a visual language for them.
